Trains collide near Palwal, driver dead

A local train hit an express at Baghola village in the district on Tuesday, leaving the driver of one of the trains dead and two other people injured.

The accident occurred at 8.30 am. A Palwal EMU shuttle hit the Lokmanya Tilak-Haridwar Express slowly making its way towards Delhi some 5 km from Palwal near Baghola village, Northern Railway spokesperson Neeraj Sharma said.

"It was foggy in the morning. The EMU driver probably could not see the signal and hit the train from behind," he said.

Passengers of both trains were safe but the crash left guard’s coach and the engine of the EMU mangled, trapping the driver and the assistant under the debris, railway officials said.
Passengers eventually pulled them out. Driver of the Palwal-Ghaziabad EMU, identified only as Yashpal, died at a hospital later in the day.

The assistant driver of the train and guard of the express train are still being treated, Sharma said.
The accident affected 15 trains on the route. Trains held up at the Palwal-Asaoti stretch are being diverted.

Northern Railway has opened helpline numbers 011-23459748, 1072, and 011-23341074 for inquiry.
Railways have also ordered an inquiry into accident.
Commissioner of Railway Safety SK Pathak will look into the accident, said a senior Railway Ministry official.
